What are foot switches?
Foot switches, or foot pedals, are used to operate equipment in situations where hands-free control is safer or just more convenient. When pressure is applied to a foot switch, it changes contacts within an electrical circuit. You'll find these switches on various levels of machinery across all industries, from dentist chairs to large-scale manufacturing systems.
How do foot switches work?
Foot switches can be separated into two main categories:
Momentary
This requires constant contact for operation, shutting off once the pressure is removed. These switches provide greater precision and can enhance machine safety because they must be used deliberately. They're recommended for short tasks only to avoid physical fatigue.
MaintainedThis type of pedal switch is also referred to as a "latching" foot switch. It is activated with one press and will remain in the contact position until pressed again. Typically used to start or stop machines that run independently, such as assembly lines and other factory equipment.
What types of foot switches are available?
As well as being divided between momentary and maintained, foot switches can be considered based on their configuration:
Single-position foot switch
A pedal providing a simple on-off function.
Two-position foot switchAllows for variable control with more than one setting. For example, a light press activates the switch, then applying more pressure triggers a second function.
Three-position foot switchThese switches have an additional fail-safe mechanism, so are often used in applications where there is a relatively high risk of harm, like spot welding and machine cutting and tooling. They're sometimes called emergency stop foot switches. The first position activates the machine, the second enables the core function, and the third stops the machine immediately, helping you regain control rapidly in emergency situations and prevent injury to personnel.
How to choose your foot switch
There are several key features to consider when selecting your foot switch. Focus on where it will be used and choose a model that meets those needs:
- Electrical ratings: Voltage and amperage must be matched to the system to ensure optimum performance and compatibility.
- IP rating: A high IP rating, demonstrating resistance to damage from dust, debris and liquids, is critical in environments where reliability is of the utmost importance, such as hospitals. Check for suitable ISO certification if using the switch with medical devices.
- Ergonomics: Bear in mind aspects like the pedal shape and angle, especially for momentary foot switches which should be comfortable to operate over long periods.
- Housing: Designs with protective covers safeguard against accidental activation by falling objects or carelessness but can slow response times in emergencies.
- Size: Especially for enclosed designs, ensure sufficient room for operation in work boots.
- Material: Plastic is lightweight and cost-effective whereas a metal foot switch is more durable, making it ideal if it is used frequently.
- Mounting: Choose between floor, surface or PCB mount designs to suit your needs. Floor mounting is the most secure option, helping to prevent movement during use.
- Safety: Some foot switches come with additional safety features, such as shields and toe loops, or are painted for maximum visibility in dim settings.
